How Harry Styles’ ‘Watermelon Sugar’ Music Video Paved The Way For Summer Fashion

If there’s one thing Harry Styles wears best, it’s… everything. His retro-minded look has become as recognizable as his music, and whether you’re a fan or not, you cannot deny his sense of style is iconic at best. The constant public reaction to his nail polish, pearls, and flared pants is proof of that. While in quarantine, we have (Me mostly) been counting down the hours, minutes, and seconds until the release of his latest music video “Watermelon Sugar,” because there’s nothing to boost a mood like new Harry content. The video did not disappoint; it is, essentially, a fashion thirst trap and one that has set trends for our summer styles.

In the music video, between ample amounts of kissing, watermelon slices (of course), and a whole lot of beach fun, every trend we’ve been eyeing for summer 2020 makes an appearance. First, Harry’s many forms of oversized and tinted sunnies, an accessory that we’re predicting, will replace the tiny eyewear of summer’s past any day now. From sky blue to vibrant pink to some fun shaped sunnies, it’s time to say bye-bye to pointless little sunglasses and hello to the Elton John inspired shades!

There was also an abundance of crocheted tops, bikinis, shorts, and vests. You may remember this trend back when Coachella was on the rise; well, it’s back and ready to shine once again. Crochet at the beach isn’t exactly groundbreaking but for some reason, when paired with electric blue oversized shades and worn by Harry Styles, we can’t help but get the impression that crochet is fresh and new again.

Another must, as if we weren’t begging for the watermelons on our screens, the fruit embellished clothing the women were sporting were just as juicy. Cherry, apple, and watermelon prints have been in trend for the past couple of weeks, some could say because of his single ‘Cherry,’ and others could say it’s because they are point-blank adorable and perfect for summer.

The rise of the Hawaiian shirt is here, or has it ever even left? We have seen so many variations of a summer staple, and somehow we’re not over it. Now in tasteful prints and nostalgic hues. Styles is no stranger to the camp shirt, a menswear trend that seems to keep sticking each spring/summer season.  The 70s are in full swing, and we’re all here for it.

A few months into temporary lockdown that has no end date, Styles offers inspiration in favor of dressing for the summer you want, not the summer you have. Maybe, his outfits suggest, if you have this much fun getting dressed each morning, opening yourself up to the fantasy clothing can offer, the reality of the rest of your day will be all the better off for it, too. In the spirit of Mr. Styles, go out and have the summer of your life and look good doing it. 70s trends are here, and with that comes the vibes that include living young, wild, and free. Oh, and if you see a Watermelon lying around, don’t forget to give it some SUGAR.
